Ogre spotted 'In the Park After Dark'

Vasona Lake County Park is the picture of physical activity. From the runners, walkers and bikers on its trails, to the jungle gym enthusiasts and boat paddlers on the lake, the joys of fresh air and exercise converge during this time of year, making Vasona a destination for summer revelers. After all, the county parks' motto is "Go Outside and Play."

So what were more than 70 people doing taking a load off, lying around on the park's grass, and eating nachos Thursday night? Spending a family night at the park, minus the couch of course.

Bundled up in blankets and sleeping bags, Los Gatans gathered for the first of four nights of free entertainment at "In the Park After Dark Movie Week," sponsored by Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation.

Senior Park Ranger Aniko Millan has organized the Movie Week since its inception five years ago. "It's been my monster," Millan joked.

"Family is the focus," she said. "We feature hit films from last year and one classic - to appeal to everyone."

Tonight the modern classic "Goonies" will be screened at 8 p.m. (The movie won't begin until dark, sometime after 8:30 p.m., but volunteers advise moviegoers to arrive before 8 p.m. to ensure they find a spot on the lawn.)

Volunteers at Thursday night's screening of "Shrek 2" helped Millan set up the movie projector and sound system and answered questions for the crowd. Dan De Luca and Mark and Lori Dolmatch have volunteered for many of the park's annual events, including the "Vasona Vibration" summer music series, "Trail Watch" and "South Bay Fishing in the City," but said Millan is the one who makes movie night happen.

As an organizer of many park events and activities, Ranger Millan lives by the county parks' motto, and getting people outdoors is her mission. "So that's what we're doing here tonight," she said.
