More West Nile fogging in South Bay

More mosquitoes in Santa Clara County have tested positive for West Nile Virus, prompting another fogging and raising questions about how best to combat the growing disease.

Crows are driving the virus' success in Santa Clara County where it kills 95 percent of the birds that contract it, according to Santa Clara County Vector Control. The worst area in California is Kern County where there have been 63 reported human cases. In Santa Clara County, there have been two human cases.

"Absolutely, I think West Nile Virus is here to stay,'' Russ Parman with Santa Clara County Vector Control said.

Although the virus is rarely fatal it does pose a greater risk to the elderly, diabetics and anyone with immuno-deficiency issues, Parman said.

It's not time to head for the hills yet Parman said, but he does urge residents to keep screens secure, wear mosquito repellent and report any standing water.

"It's the backyard stuff that is our greatest challenge,'' Parman said.

Three traps along Quito Road at Devon Avenue, Sousa Lane and Halifax Drive turned up positive mosquitoes, according to Santa Clara County, so ground fogging is planned for Wednesday. It will start at 11 p.m., weather permitting.
